What is an NFT? What does it mean to mint an NFT? And what does Ethereum blockchain has to do with any of it?

If you don’t know the answers to these questions don’t worry, that’s why we’re here. One of our main goals with Toby The Goat (https://tobythegoat.io) is to educate people on NFTs, give them the knowledge on what NFTs are and, among other things, why they can be worth such large amounts of money.

We could write for days about NFTs and the surrounding concepts but we do not want to make this overly extensive. The goal of this specific story is to give a brief introduction to NFTs and teach how to mint an NFT in the context of our collection Toby The Goat, or TTG for short.

We will guide you through the following points:

— NFTs

  • What is an NFT
  • What is the role of the Ethereum blockchain
  • Why choose Ethereum’s blockchain when there are others with lower fees
  • What is minting an NFT

— MetaMask

  • Why MetaMask
  • How do I install MetaMask
  • How do I setup a new wallet in MetaMask
  • How do I transfer Ether to my MetaMask

NFTs

what is an NFT?

NFT stands for Non-Fungible Token. “Non-fungible” more or less means that it’s unique and can’t be replaced with something else. For example, a bitcoin is fungible — trade one for another bitcoin, and you’ll have exactly the same thing. A one-of-a-kind trading card, however, is non-fungible. If you traded it for a different card, you’d have something completely different [1].

To simply put it, it’s something unique that you own and can prove that you own thanks to the private/public key cryptography nature of the crypto wallets.

What is the role of the Ethereum or any other blockchain that supports NFTs?

Their role is to store information that makes the tokens work differently from, say, an ETH coin. Among other things, they keep track of who is the owner of each token and allow for the token transfers to occur. Ethereum’s blockchain is the most commonly used for this purpose, but there are others that support NFTs. Examples of such are the Solana and the Polygon blockchain.

Why choose Ethereum’s blockchain when there are others with lower fees?

Well, why play in the minor leagues when you can play in the premier league? Ethereum is where the big players are, and with our project’s quality we want to be in the top, we don’t settle for anything less.

What is minting an NFT?

Minting an NFT can be seen as the process of obtaining the ownership of an NFT. When you mint one of our NFTs what happens is that there is a transfer of a random TTG token from the zero addres (0x00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000) to your wallet’s address. This transfer is then validated and added to the blockchain, after it has been successfully added to the blockchain you will see the NFTs that you minted in your wallet’s address.

You can see them in metamask, for example, or in OpenSea, the leading marketplace for buying and selling NFTs. In OpenSea you can see who is the owner of each token. By who is the owner, we mean the address that has ownership over each token.

MetaMask

Why metamask?

The reason why we use and recommend metamask is the same to why use Ethereum’s blockchain. It’s the one most commonly used, this means that there is lesser friction for users who are no strangers to minting NFTs.

How do I install MetaMask?

Metamask is available as a smartphone App, for android or iOS, or as a browser extension.

To download and install MetaMask go to the following link:

https://metamask.io/download.html

How do I setup a new wallet in MetaMask?

We will demonstrate in video format the step by step installation of the browser extension with Google Chrome. The process is the same with other browsers and the smartphone Apps.

At the end of the video we show where you can view the address of your newly created MetaMask wallet.

WARNING: NEVER REVEAL YOUR SECRET RECOVERY PHRASE TO ANYONE! We do it in the video for educational purposes only.

How can I transfer Ether to my metamask wallet?

You can transfer Ether from an existing wallet, or you can transfer Ether by making a withdraw from your broker’s wallet, we will explain how to proceed using Binance and Coinbase.

How to withdraw from Binance to MetaMask:

1 — After logging in, go to wallet overview and select withdraw:

2 — Select withdraw crypto:

3 — Select Coin ETH; copy your MetaMask address to “Withdraw to”; Select the amount (We recommend 0.09 for each TTG, you will not spend 0.09 but MetaMask will ask for this value as a margin of safety to guarantee that the mint is successful); click withdraw:

4 — All done! You should receive your Ether in your MetaMask wallet in a minute or two.

How to withdraw from CoinBase to MetaMask:

1 — After logging in, select Send/Receive:

2 — Select the amount (We recommend 0.09 for each TTG, you will not spend 0.09 but MetaMask will ask for this value as a margin of safety to guarantee that the mint is successful); Copy your metamask address to the “To” field, select Pay with Ethereum; Select continue:

3 — All done! You should receive your Ether in your MetaMask wallet in a minute or two.

Going forward with minting a Toby The Goat

Once you have enough Ether in your MetaMask wallet you’re all set for minting our TTG NFTs. But don’t rush just yet to mint NFTs 🙌 Check our website to see if it’s open. We are doing a Phase 1 mint to raise money to invest in promoting the project worldwide and will later open a Phase 2 mint. Check our social media to see where were at with the project. Don’t worry about trying to mint an NFT and getting a failed transaction because the minting is closed, our website will only let you mint if minting is open.

Overview/simulation of minting a Toby The Goat NFT

We will show you exactly how everything is processed when minting a TTG NFT.

1 — Go to our website https://tobythegoat.io

2 — Connect your wallet, we recommend MetaMask

3 — Select the number of NFTs and click mint

4 — Confirm the transaction

5 — That’s it!

After you minted the NFT you will get an unrevealed TTG in your wallet. You can see what token ID you got in different ways. One of them is by going to OpenSea and logging in with your wallet, you well get something like this:

What do I need to do to reveal the art?

Nothing. The art will reveal itself starting on December 25th 15:00 UTC +0. At that moment we will release the metadata of all the goats minted and everyone will see the art and traits of the TTGs they own.

That was long…

We didn’t want to make a very extensive story, but at the same time we needed to pass enough information so everyone knows how to proceed to mint our TTGs. If you feel like we have left out important information or you have further doubts drop us a message on our Discord server or send us as email to info@tobythegoat.io
